In this blog you will find news and information about Chess Position Trainer - current und future versions.

Holiday Greetings from CPT

Work on CPT 4 has started again and I plan to blog in January about some new features in more detail. One will be the new repertoire explorer which I briefly explained a while back. Another one is something special I haven´t mention yet. I call it the "position explorer" and it is so far my favorite new feature of CPT 4.

CPT introduced a tree view for the users repertoire which in itself was a quite nice idea, but it needs a lot of space on the screen and thus is not of such a great help for the daily work. The "position explorer" picks up the original idea behind the tree view, but takes this to a totally new level. You will be able to navigate through your repertoire as never before (and probably even didn´t think of).

Stay tuned for details around end of January on this blog.

Thanks and happy holidays!

Hi Stefan,  Have just stumbled upon your software as I have been thinking about taking up chess again after a long break.  The first thing I wanted to do is put together another opening repotoire.  Your software looks just the job.

Des

Hi,will CPT4 be able to back-solve a database by default?

i.e. 2 lines come about from current position... one has many more games and better results for your side from the databse... and the other one has less games and less favourable results... however when you check the individual games you find out that all the GMs are playing the less played (historically) line NOW and with much better results.... the program should be able to tell you that the most recent results have been played with the alternative move and helps your position more than your opponent (due to new improvements to theory). Back-solving would allow you to find out. Will CPT4 have an easy way to back-solve instead of purely going by previous winning percentage? (I'm assuming CPT4 will also show previous winning percentage based on some stuff I read about CPT4 before, i think)

Thanks,

Kevin.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will keep them in mind. That's something I would like to see in CPT too. I'm not sure if it will make it in the next release yet though. I've decided to cut it down a little bit to hopefully accelerate the development.

Very impressive on your CPT 3.3.

Some suggestions:

1) The repertoire scores is better to be something e.g. "12.34%" so that the user can see his progress after every training.

2) For the training mode, is it possible to select the next line based on the worse line score (or the worst average position score for a line)?

Can't wait to see your next version.

Thanks a lot for your great job.

Thanks for your suggestion. Regarding 2) I'm not sure I got you right. There is an option to train variations and you can decide how many half-moves a line can have at most. Next you have to check the option "look ahead". If you set this to the maximum CPT should always focus on the line which average score is the worst of your sub-repertoire. I suggest to continue the discussion in the forum if I got you wrong.

Sorry I was wrong for the 2nd point.

I did not play it very much but instead use it as a tool to train my 10-year-old son. I got that impression because I saw his training always focused on certain lines due to the settings I chose.

Sometimes I feel the only motivation for my son to train is the percentage of the repertoire scores, but many times he got frustrated since the number did not change. Thus, I suggested to have more decimal digits for the number.

Also, the percentage should be shown in the training mode so that he does not have to exit the training mode to check it. Might be better if having more indicators to show his achievement each time, e.g., how many lines worked, percentage today or this training session, etc. For the feature in the sound support, might be better if can have equivalent visual representation, e.g. giving a star.

For the training options, I expect to have two more:

 1) Start from the n-th move of each line

 2) Start from the last 100% position of each line

So, my son does not have to repeat those starting positions again and again, and we do not have to change the options or starting positions each time before the training.

Last, I would like to see the feature to monitor the progress besides the percentage repertoire scores, e.g., do first 5 moves all pass 60%? Where is the weakness? etc.

Again, appreciated for your great job.

Thanks for your suggestions. I like the two suggested new training options. Actually I have been thinking about them already too. I will put them on the list.
