CPT 4 - Status-Quo

Many CPT players have been asking me what happened to the original Road Map. Obviously CPT 4 has not yet been released (you did not miss a secret link). I regret to have not updated the road map yet.

Today I will give you on overview of what happened and what the current status is.

Posting road maps is always a risky undertaking as it is difficult to predict a software development plan due to many unforseeable potential issues. That is (beside not giving away useful info to the competition) why many Tech companies don't publish road maps at all or make only vague statements. Certainly, for a private project this is even truer.

However, I took the risk to fail for several reasons:

  • I wanted to give a strong signal to everybody out there who is interested in a new version of CPT that I'm very committed (again)
  • I wanted to make clear that you guys don't have to wait ages till you see that version
  • I wanted to challenge myself in order to give this project priority

Having published a road map and seeing and reading how many people out there actually care about it, gives you some pressure, to say the least. I look at this in a positive manner. Its awesome to know you have created something that so many people care about it, but it is also true that with success / public interest comes responsibility.

So far I have been partly succesful accodingly to my plan.

So what happend? I was on track with the first part of the road map till January. For some private reasons (promotion at the job) it become harder from Februar on to spend time on this project.

Having said that there has been no real break or black whole again. Development is going on - every week!

Current status:

  • Edit Module 95% done
  • Training Module 80% done
  • Statistics: 30% done
  • Misc. like DGT, Engine support and some other stuff: 30%  done
  • Fine-tuning, bringing everything together

The biggest work-package is / was the edit and training module. These two are almost done. The statistic part is not just a gimmick, it let me also check whether everything is working fine (e.g. training results). It's also just about 2 days of work.

Overall I estimate to have to spend about 10-15 more days on the project to get a beta. Unfortunately I always have to find some time slots to work on it as this is not my daily job (sadly). So these 10-15 days are in reality several weeks probably.

My conclusion for the moment: there is not so much left to get CPT 4 beta ready, but it's difficult to predict when exactly. Summer is my personal next set goal. I reseved some vacations for this.

I will try to improve my communication by posting updates of the first 4 bulletin points as they happen.

Thanks for your patient!

Stefan

Stefan, I've loved CPT 3.3 for years and am greatly looking forward to 4.  When the time comes, if you need testers who know how to write good bug reports (instructions to reproduce, etc) I'd love to help you out.

You can find contact information for me on my URL link.

Thanks again for all the hard work.

Second only to winboard, CPT is my favourite chess tool. It's helped me save many minutes at the chessboard. Do allow yourself the time to complete your work at your own pace, not at ours.

Thanks for a great application!

Stefan, Great programme! Have downloaded 3.2 and shpongled and standard repertoires. Amazing how much easier it is to memorise variations from CPT as opposed to looking at the books (Chess Openings Explained and Attacking with 1.e4 - both of which I have).

Am about to upgrade to 3.3 to use the DGT board. Is this version as stable as 3.2 - any know issues?

Remember to contribute folks!

Stefan, it is so great to know that you are making progress with CPT, the concept is fantastic, and your ability to make it user friendly has no rivals, the CPT 4 will give us strong motivation to study and train opening theory at a new level! Thanks for creating such a powerful tool!

Keep going, Stefan!

We know from prior versions that the new CPT 4.0 will be wonderful, and can't thank you enough for all your dedication and hard work, especially since your promotion must require a lot more of your time!

Hi Stefan, this is a major project and we understand that you have priorities that needs your attention. I am just wondering, why don't you post this as a community project, as programmers we will be keen to assist and help finish the work. This way everybody wins and you don't have to do all the work alone.
