CPT 4: Transposition & Comments

What do they have in common? They are both implemented since yesterday.

A very long time ago I mentioned in a blog post that transpositions across openings or even repertoires will be covered in CPT 4. As I'm getting closer to finish the last features this was still left on my list.

Let's start with a screenshot:

In this example I opened the Alekhine Opening. Before we really reach the starting position (after Black played Nf6) you can see that the repertoire covers many other openings for other black replies. In the past CPT wouldn't show you this info. You would have to know and open the specific opening yourself. While this is not a big concern for the starting position you will soon appreciate this feature once you detect transpositions a little bit deeper in your opening tree, especially if you play openings which very likely transpose to other openings (e.g. 1.Nf3).

Now, instead of showing you just the info you can click on these moves too. Then CPT will automatically open the other opening and construct the move order to reach this position (again: more meaningful if you are deeper in your opening tree). This is a pretty smooth and intutive new way to navigate through your openings.

Of course, this also works for the Previous Branches moves. If moves from other openings lead to the current position CPT will show you these moves too and again you can just click and thus browse "backwards" across your complete repertoire:

CPT is smart enough to not show you the opening column if only moves of the current opening are available and hence saving space.

I'm looking forward to your feedback once you get your hands on this new feature during beta.

Now, let's turn to comments. Like CPT 3.3 you can still edit move and position comments. One of my favorite new features nicely incorporates this info into the tooltip for the position explorer (please note the two different comment types to the right and bottom):

That's it for today.

Best,

Stefan

I am just curious; were do the names of openins come - and are the ECO codes available too.  It is quite a chalenge to maintain corect names/codes...

Is there any easy way to connect opening names and ECO codes with existing repertoire (made originally with pen and paper)?

The opening names come directly from your personal repertoires / openings. These names and moves are not based on an any ECO codes what so ever. They have to be part of your repertoire and can have any names as you edit them.

I have ECO code support on my list. Not sure if it will make it into this version. In this case CPT would just show you for a position to which ECO code it belongs. It wouldn't automatically name any openings / positions on its own. It would just provide this info "on the fly".

I wonder, with these two different comment types, what happens to them if I decide to export a repertoire I've worked on in CPT 4 back to pgn format? Will both types be converted, and if so, in what way?

By the way, I also wonder how CPT handles "null moves". These are used in Chessbase files like the Everyman Chess E-books, to mark major branching points. Does CPT support null moves so it's possible to convert the Everyman Ebooks into CPT repertoires directly? (This may be a stupid question as I'm not even sure the pgn format supports null moves...)

The two different comment types exist already for CPT 3.3. They are both exported. You might want to make a little test export to see how exactly the result looks like.

While null moves are with high prio on my list they probably won't make it into CPT 4.

In CPT 4 will there be a so-called "demo board" capability, where one can place any group of pieces on a board [even without Kings] and be able to move the pieces to any square, legal or not?

The idea is to be be able to use CPT 4 for instructional purposes and be able to move pieces to any square, so move tracking should be able to be turned off when its not necessary during instruction.

This is not yet planned, but it probably wouldn't be too much extra work to add.

When you say instructional purposes: what exactly is your goal? Do you want to use the demo board while you connected to a projector? Any CPT specific feature you would like to demonstrate? Or do you really just need an application to have such a demo board and CPT just happens to be already on your PC installed (so to say)?

Just trying to get the picture to come-up with a good solution.

Before you asked the questions, I was only looking to use the demo board while my PC is connected to a projector with CPT4 being on my PC. Now that I think about it, am considering using Camtasia ( a PC screen recorder program) to record each of the small demo sections. Camtasia allows one to add arrows, dots and squares in various colors etc. to hi-light and point out various points on the board and to make it easier for the kids to focus on the points I would be making.  If these highlighting capabilities were added to CPT, then it wouldn't be necessary to use Camtasia, other than to record and save the short demo.

I teach chess to several kids/adults and it would be great to be able to have the capability to drag and drop pieces to demonstrate various chess concepts other than just openings. e.g. endgame positions, and middle game concepts.

In terms of features, it would also be wonderful to have changeable on-the-fly options for:

1) legal moves only, OR

2) illegal moves allowed (e.g. drag and drop pieces anywhere)

3) track legal moves from when this option switch is set on until it is turned off.

The idea is to be able to turn on/off any of the 3 above during the demo. It's sometimes easier to track the moves made to replay them and sometimes it's not necessary.

The existing CPT features are awesome for teaching openings, but this demo board feature was intended to teach various chess middlegame and endgame concepts to the kids in a very flexible manner.

Sincerely,

Richard Reid

Now we are talking!

Actually support for creating eBooks / chess teachers and better support for middle and endgames is one of the highes priorities after CPT 4 release. If you want to exchange ideas about this topic, please don't hesitate to send me an email (stefan.rezewitz and the main domain of CPT).

Best,

Stefan
