It's great that CPT 4 now is available. I have run all pre-prod versions and was happy to be able to buy and run this great software.

Unfortunately I had problems when I wanted to buy the program. The company handling the payment didn't accept my email adress (a gmail adress) and when choosing the other on line payment method "Nordea" I was epected to have a digipass that I don't have because I haver another bank.

Now I don't know what to do and I am very suprised to encounter these obstacles. I have during many years bought a lot of stuff on the net without encountéring this kind of problems. Please advice.

Thanks for all your great feedback, much appreciated! Boy, I'm so exhausted. The last weeks have been like crazy. From 26th December on my batteries will be recharged and I will continue the work with the promised features / documentation.

@Göran: I'm sorry for causing this trouble. I realized that the payment service does not accept GMail very late in the process. They argue with bad statistics about credit card fraud in conjunction with such free mailers. I was very suprised too for the same reason as you as I never ran into such a problem with my gmail account in the past either. As a quick work-around you could either use one of the other payment options (e.g. payapal or wire transfer should work with free mailers) or you could use the old donate function of CPT 3.3 which you can find here: http://www.chesspositiontrainer.com/English/Support/Support.html

I will then send you a license code.

Many thanks for the final version of CPT4. However, I think it's very uncool that you so suddenly decide to ask money for it. I understand you asking money for the many hours you've put into this project. But you could have given us a heads up on that.

Of course it is easy to miss this blog post if you didn't follow the blog closely. There have been more hints for this decision in several other blog posts. The main reason to announce this before beta phase started was exactly to have a fair communication before anybody spends his personal time on beta testing. However, there still exists a free version of CPT 3.3 and CPT 4 too. Some features will be deactivated after 30 days. Then, that version will be  similiar to CPT 3.3 in respect to features.

Is there support for uci engine in CPT 4?

Not with the current version, but there will be an update beginning of next year which will support UCI. The current license will work for that update.

Would it be possible to create a "portable" version of the software (e.g. .zip with all necessary files)? In other words: I don't have admin rights on my notebook to use the installer.

I haven't tried it yet, but it could work. CPT 3.3 could be just copied and no install by a setup program was necessary (of course there are some disadvantages like no automatically installation of the figurine font). I'm not sure about some of the new third-party components I'm using though. So, I suggest to just ZIP all files from the ChessPositionTrainer folder and run the exe. Please let me know if this works or which error message is shown.

Hello Stefan, waiting a long time fpr CPT 4 I'm vey happy now that there finally is a release. It's definitly worth the price and a great program.

However, I'm missing one option, something like training especially the missed positions. When I make a mistake there obviosly is a problem with the position, so I want to train it very well.

Also I haven't learned a position if I recall the right move once. Is there a possibility to mark it as "learned" not until e.g. 5 repetitions ?

I seem to remember this was going to be available back in April. Back then I would have paid for CPT. Unfortunately, for me at least, times have moved on: 2011 was definitely the year of the mobile app.

I don't particularly want to spend my most valuable time (i.e. at home where I can do anything) with chess position trainer. However those wasted minutes on the bus or train would be a perfect time, and whipping out the laptop isn't ideal in those situations.

I hope you'll consider it in the future, unfortunately I think I will be an old man by the time you deliver (or someone will beat you to it)

Well done for actually getting there however. It is to be commended. In your next release try not to let feature creep stop you from getting it out sooner. Stick to your roadmap and don't be too tempted by that 'killer feature' you've just thought of. It can always go into the next version after all.

Stefan, I must say that I thought and actually was hoping that you would reward your beta testers somehow, but it did not happen, unfortunately. I'll wait to see what limitations are implemented after demo period of 30 days is over, hopefully it is still usable, otherwise I'll get back to CPT3.3. Chess is a hobby for me and unfortunately I cannot afford paying full price for v.4, especially that subsequent releases (bugfixes too?) are planned to be paid too. I know that it's my issue I'm living in a country where CPT price to average salary ratio is much higher than in US or Germany. Anyway, keep up a good work and keep listening to your users - I remember how far from perfection the first beta was and how it was changing from version to version to meet user needs.

@Itias: I wanted to provide a special offer to all beta testers, but then decided to do it in this blog post for all blog readers which are mostly beta testers and loyal CPT users for many years. Please send me an email and tell me in which country you are living and what reasonable price you could afford.

@Yimmi: yes, you can install it on as many computers as you like as long as you are the only user (of the program). Then I grant you the right to use them even in parallel (if you can handle it)! :)

Congratulations for the release of CPT 4, a great programm like CPT 3. Naturally I have paid already for it. I would like to see the following improvements in future versions (most of them were in CPT 3):

a) The symbol for "white light advantage" is not ok (both in the "main menu" and in the "candidate moves" window). The cross of the symbol is missing.

b) Figurines in the "candidate moves" window would be pretty! (like in CPT3).

c) The sounds of CPT4 are ok but I prefer the sounds of CPT 3 (similar to the ones used by Chessbase).

d) Uci engine support.

Stefan, after reading your reply to Yimmi above, I thought I had better ask you about my situation in case I am in breach of the licence. I have an 11yo daughter that I create the repatoires for. She then is supposed to practice them. Do I need another licence? So far, she hasn't used the Final Release but I had intended to put it on the laptop for her very soon as I have some new openings prepared.

@Irulats: If a father (or mother) wants to use CPT to teach openings her daugther / his son they don't need an additional license. Just let me know how she / he is making progress with CPT!

I also tried several email addresses in late December 2011 and early January 2012 and wasn't successful in using my credeit card to pay for the final version.

So on January 24, 2012 I paid $40 via Paypal: I made a donation like you suggested to one of the previous posters.

I sent an email to stefan.renzewitz@chesspositiontrainer.com on January 24 showing the Paypal receipt, but I haven't received the activation key yet.

Could you please send it to me soon? If you didn't receive my first email, I will send it again. My CPT has now de-activated certain functions while waiting for the key...

I sent you on the same day an email with the license code. My first attempt failed as I received an error message:

"The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 spam detected (state 18)."

Then I used another email address to send you the license code and I didn't receive the error message this time. Maybe it is in your spam folder?
