This is the official release candidate version of Chess Position Trainer 4. You can find out more about the upcoming version in the official CPT blog or forum.

This is the last version before final release in December (before x-mas).

Previous databases can be used with this new version. Database created with this version can be used with the final version.

The biggest change of this version is the separation of the training functionality into a separate module.

NEW

Training: training functionality separated from the opening module into a new training module
Training: recall divided into "scheduled" and "oldest first" (the latter works similiar to CPT 3.3). Furthermore the training modes for recall and learning new positions have been better grouped to make it more intuitive
Training: Show hint function is back. If you use this option the program will show you the correct move, but the position will be considered as "missed candidate move"
Training: new live statistics. One for recall modes and one for learning new positions
Training: choosing an opening for training changed. You can choose from a dropdown list. At the same time you can easily select a (sub-)variation and train it (although some training options are disabled in this case)
Training: Sounds during demo-mode played now
Run games against repertoire: results can be used to update training scores
Run games against repertoire: can be applied only to black or white games which match the player name.
Run games against repertoire: novelties can be copied and the corresponding positions marked as "Novelty"
Run games against repertoire: games can be archived and removed
More position evaluation symbols added (e.g. "with initiative")
Backup system added. Once enabled the program will automatically take care that a daily, weekly and monthly copy of your repertoire database is created (whenever you open it).

FIXES & MISC

Training crashed when the option "start with first new position"
Training did not check the user in other lines when the mainline even with the option activated to accept more than the top ranked candidate move
Training is less pushing to the recall mode. It will only ask once per loaded repertoire whether you want to recall already learned positions before you start with learning new positions.
PGN import did not import any move or position evaluations
Some positions evaluations are shown incorrectly in the candidate move window (e.g. "-" instead of "=")
Improved performance of calculating repertoire score (usually updated after training or importing positions)
Import automatically fixes the infamous ambigous move issue (exists in CPT 3.3 already). That is: some programs create incorrect PGN files by using the long notation instead of the short one in cases where two pieces can move to the same square, but one of them is pinned (and thus can't move). This eventually lead to the situation that the player made the correct move in a training session, but the program would not accept it. This issue is fixed and will be automatically corrected during the import (but not for already imported PGN files).

Till the final release some new sounds will be added (similiar to the CPT 3.3 move and capture sounds) and new images for the chess pieces will be provided!

Beside that the focus will be on documentation.

Chess Position Trainer 4 - Beta 1.8 (expires on the 28th of November)

This is the official beta version of Chess Position Trainer 4. You can find out more about the upcoming version in the official CPT blog or forum.

There is only one more beta version scheduled for November before the final release will be available in December.

Previous databases can be used with this new beta. Database created with this version can be used with the final version.

General improvements and bug fixes

FIX: EPD import & export several bug fixes, speed improvement and UI optimization. If the EPD files contains moves ('bm' or 'pm') for a positions they can be copied to the position comment. No new positions are moves are created. The main intention is to use the analysis for position evaluation updates in combination with the min-max-function
FIX: candidate move list showed non-opening candidate moves in the same color
FIX: jumping to next position with a certain marking would jump across all openings instead of the current one leading to not corresponding move list (and then things became confusing).
FIX: Import old CPT 3.3 sub-repertoires: comments of the sub-repertoire itself are imported now
FIX: Performance of importing big PGN files has been much improved
FIX: Deactivating success sounds works now
NEW: Min-Max-Calculation works for notator symbols too
NEW: candidate move list: clicking on a move which belongs to another opening let you cancel to jump to that opening
NEW: current position can be copied to the clipboard (check ribbon page 'Position')

Training improvements and bug fixes

FIX: Recall scheduler checked for dates while the training module itself would check for the concrete time leading to the message that no position exist to train although the schedulers claims there are some. Now, both check for dates only and ignore the time.
FIX: Recall would focus on some positions (or even loop within the same session). After you played a wrong move for a position for several times such positions could get into a loop there they are always recalled the next day instead of increasing intervals.
FIX: Sometimes a move would be repeated for black or white (e.g.: "1. e4 e4") leading to several side-effects
FIX: 'No positions for training' message box would be shown several times instead of just once
NEW: Position and move comments can be shown during training. You can decide when they should be shown (e.g. only after playing a wrong move or always)
NEW: Complete line mode let you start with the first new move if selected and thus providing the best of complete line mode and filter mode. That means you are still playing complete lines, but you start with the first move which you don't know yet
NEW: Sidelines upt to 20 can be chosen

For the last beta version later in November the 'Run Games Against Repertoire' module will offer a function to update your training scores based on your played games and to mark positions with all novelities from your games (either played by you or your opponent). DGT support will be polished.

Fixed issues:

Delete Move issue fixed: if a move transposed to a previous position of the move list or was part of a variation deletion failed
Reset Training Score works now
Run against games: if no matching for the player name exist CPT would show an error message
Several activities while the training has started could lead to an error. These are no longer possible (e.g. existing application, switching to statistic module). You have to stop the training first now
List of recent files was not correctly updated.
Jumping to next branch could loop endlessly if it encounters a transposition under some cicumstanceds

New feature:

Sound is back - much improved in comparison to CPT 3.3. You have several options to adjust the sounds which you can find on the chessboard ribbon page.

Open issues / feauters:

EPD import
Importing >10,000 games at once will take too long.
Updating training scores based on games played (run against games)

This version is very stable now. I intend to support any database created with this version for the final version. Nonetheless I recommend to make a backup from your database from time to time (you always should).

Fixed issues (not complete list):

Several (significant) performance improvements. Adding new moves for bigger openings (>70,000 moves) will be done instantly now. Deleting moves is much faster now too (and the cancel button works). Exporting is much faster too (and the cancel button works).
Serious import bug fixed: problem with importing of games / repertoires with comments. Several characters would not be recognized and even worse leading to an opening where the program would start to jump through your opening.
Another important bug fixed for deleting a move: if more than one candidate move existed for a position and you deleted the first one this could result in an issue for the training later.
Photo reading: now it works really randomly. Before it was sticking to the same 50 positions (not too exciting after some minutes)
Min-Max-Calculation works now correctly
Navigating backwords could reset the complete move list in openings with transpositions under certain circumstances: fixed.
Opening Knowledge Statistic: you can decide to just show all openings of white or black (or both)
Opening Complexity Statistic: you can not only decide the color, but also to hide Point Labels or the Legend. These are useful options for players with bigger repertoires.
Statistics and Scheduler: significant performance boost for bigger repertoires
Several other issues

Fixed issues (not complete list):

Training: Training Scores can be resettet
Training: New Training option to train from current position on. Works with Complete Line and Filter mode.
Training: You can skip scheduled recalls now
Training: Recall mode. You can decide to recall positions which are not scheduled for recalls. In this case the program will test you in those which you haven't trained for the longest time.
Training: Complete line mode. The program claims there are no new positions for training left although it will test you in new positions if you re-start training. This issue has been fixed.
Training: New button to swith back to Edit Mode.
Beginner / User mode removed
New ribbon button added to activate / hide Position Explorer. As this is the most performance intensive control you get full control when you want to use it.
Unicode for comments supported now (this should support all language specific characters)
Min-Max-Function fixed
Delete button will work now depending on the active control (e.g. if the Repertoire Explorer is active it will delete a repertoire item)
Message-Boxes layout improved
Several other improvements and minor bug fixes

If the database which was used for the last session was deleted in the meantime CPT 4 would not start correctly anymore

It's a beta update. All reported issues have been fixed!

Fixed issues (not complete):

unable to cancel calculating training score
Double click on move in the move list: the position before the move is shown instead of after
Run Games against Repertoire: Key board arrows can't be used to navigate through move list. Additional keyboard support to navigate through game list added.
Super tooltips (they are really called like this ) added to the ribbon which explains most commands while hovering with the mouse over them (in more detail than common tooltips).
Several training issues fixed
Comments from CPT 3.3 not imported. Now all move and position comments and evaluations as well as position markings are imported
Now you can choose to have white at the bottom always (and not based on the color of your side for an opening)
Several hangs at random time (mostly related to the position explorer)
Import PGN was not correct if the PGN file had variations. This actually lead to several other issues later while using CPT.
Problems with transpositions solved
Deleting candidate move fails
Import/Export now is only available if an opening exists. Crash fixed.
Import EPD is not allowing to choose file to import
Candidate move colors don't always display the top (first) choice in the candidate list
Added 4 training modes: Complete line, Filter, Photo Reading and Recall. They are not really new, but to have explicite training modes makes it easier to understand the different types of training.

This is the official beta version of Chess Position Trainer 4.

It's a beta update. Not all reported issues are yet fixed.

Fixed issues:

Training issues with too many / endless recalls hopefully fixed.
Some other incorrect training behaviour which could lead to synchronization issues between the position explorer and move list.
Exception on quit while usin the training mode.
Changing ranking and "best move" didn't work properly for the Candidate Move List
Sound deactivated for the moment. Should fix random crashes while browsing repertoire.
Removed ugly font for Moves List, Position Explorer and Candidate Move List.
New Installer which should improve the installation experience
Double-Click on Move List issue corrected
Scheduler removed from Training Mode which speeds up things
Several minor glitches (e.g. Position Explorer Tooltip was not using current chessboard settings)

Please note: this beta version will expire on the 31th of January. I will try to upload a new version till then, but can’t promise this yet.

Chess Position Trainer 4 - Technical Preview

Please note that the sole purpose of this version is to give you a first impression of how the final version of CPT 4 will look and feel like. This version is by no means feature complete (e.g. the complete training module is missing) nor is the performance yet optimized. It will crash on you on several occasions, but it won't harm your system. Still, it should be good enough to give you a first overview of what you can expect in CPT 4.

Most important: You can’t use any data entered with this version in the final CPT 4 version! This is a technical preview version and therefore will be different from the final version. Also you can expect to encounter more technical problems than you are used to from CPT 3.3.

Requisitions:
You need to run the application as administrator or you will encounter some errors whenever you close the application as it tries to store configuration files in the application folder. Win7 (64bit) users will have to run the app as WinXP 32bit application, but this should happen automatically.

Vista and Windows 7 work-around:

Unless you follow the simple instructions from Ron CPT will freeze whenever you click on a toolbar button if you run CPT under Vista or Win 7. Have a look at this easy to follow instruction from Ron in the forum.

You don't want to install the .Net Framework 1.1?

CPT will check for version 1.1 during the setup. If it is not installed, but a higher version you can also download and unzip CPT without installer (in this case no short-cut for your program menu is created and the Figurine font is not installed). Then just run the exe. Get the version without installer here
