    Chess engines

    Hello there, Stefan! Thanks for a really wonderful piece of chess software. I've also changed the fonts of the candidate moves to Zurich figurine which I have on my system. I've downloaded Spike and I have it analyzing in the background. However, the Spike output is too computerese (long algebraic!) and doesn't look too good. How do I change the analysis fonts? Furthermore, is it only Winboard engines Craty and Spike that CPT can handle?  Can UCI engines be used?  Can other  Winboard engines be used for that matter?

    Hello,

    thanks for your comment!

    At the moment you can't change the font of the analysis window. UCI support is planned, but not yet available. Someone posted at the blogs an interesting link to some software which is supposed to make UCI engines work for winboard engine only programs. You might give this a try till UCI support is ready.

    Regards,

    Stefan

    Re: Chess engines

    Hello

    I had a fun day today getting the CPT to work with Shredder.

    The upshot is that it works !!

    1. Get and install Shredder Classic Demo Download (If you don't have it! I downloaded Shredder Classic 2)

    2. Get PolyGlot

    3. Get Cygwin1.dll

    4. unzip PolyGlot and copy the folder PolyGlot_14 into C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2 (This isn't essential but I am including it for clarity)

    5. In the directory C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14 create a file called polyglot.ini and put the text in between the lines below into it and save the file (N.B. Hash is the amount of Memory in Mb that you wish to dedicate)

    -------------------------------------------------Cut After This -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [PolyGlot]

    EngineDir = C:\Program Files\ShredderChess\Shredder Classic 2
    EngineCommand = EngineClassic2.exe

    [Engine]

    Hash = 128

    -------------------------------------------------Cut Before This -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    6. Now unrar/zip the cygwin1.dll and place it into the polyglot_14 folder

    7. Now go up a directory into C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2 and open ChessPositionTrainer.exe.config

    8. Change

    <Path value="C:\xboard\crafty-19-17FEN.exe"/>
    <CommandLine value="xboard"/>

    To

    <Path value="C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe"/>
    <CommandLine value=""/>

    8. Now Open CPT and from the Menu Select Extras --> Options and tab along to the ChessEngineTab

    8. Browse to the polyglot.exe in C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe

    9. Uncheck the other options.

    10. Press OK

    11. Click the Engine Button on the toolbar and Shredder is Shredding for you.

    I am now going to go on and see if I can get other engines up and running.

    This sounds really great for a work-around till UCI support is ready in CPT. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your experience!

    Great. Cool

    Test ok: It's works with Toga II 1.3.1. Following the same instructions.

    Re: Chess engines

    First thing- After finding and using CPT for awhile, Stefan has become my new hero.

    TooSharp and Jeferson- thank you as well.

    I had been pasting postions into Jose so I could analyse them with Toga II 1.3.1.  This will be so much easier if I am

    able to analyse postions without switching applications.  My only concern is what the output will look like.

    I favor the engine output created with programs like Chessmaster 9000, Jose, and if I am remembering correctly

    Chessbase Light.  I like to see a ranking of "x" amount of moves with their corresponding values.

     About Jose:  Gorgeous, lush interface.  It has bugs though and I don't think it is supported anymore.  Too bad

    because I think it could be fantastic.  I wish I could post a screenshot of the chessboard I created wtih Jose.  Very cool.

    Anyway, I am rambling.  Thank you, Thank you. Thank you to all of you wonderful people that make things like CPT possible.
