    Chess engines

    Hello there, Stefan! Thanks for a really wonderful piece of chess software. I've also changed the fonts of the candidate moves to Zurich figurine which I have on my system. I've downloaded Spike and I have it analyzing in the background. However, the Spike output is too computerese (long algebraic!) and doesn't look too good. How do I change the analysis fonts? Furthermore, is it only Winboard engines Craty and Spike that CPT can handle?  Can UCI engines be used?  Can other  Winboard engines be used for that matter?

    Re: Chess engines

    Hello,

    thanks for your comment!

    At the moment you can't change the font of the analysis window. UCI support is planned, but not yet available. Someone posted at the blogs an interesting link to some software which is supposed to make UCI engines work for winboard engine only programs. You might give this a try till UCI support is ready.

    Regards,

    Stefan

    Re: Chess engines

    Hello

    I had a fun day today getting the CPT to work with Shredder.

    The upshot is that it works !!

    1. Get and install Shredder Classic Demo Download (If you don't have it! I downloaded Shredder Classic 2)

    2. Get PolyGlot

    3. Get Cygwin1.dll

    4. unzip PolyGlot and copy the folder PolyGlot_14 into C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2 (This isn't essential but I am including it for clarity)

    5. In the directory C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14 create a file called polyglot.ini and put the text in between the lines below into it and save the file (N.B. Hash is the amount of Memory in Mb that you wish to dedicate)

    -------------------------------------------------Cut After This -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [PolyGlot]

    EngineDir = C:\Program Files\ShredderChess\Shredder Classic 2
    EngineCommand = EngineClassic2.exe

    [Engine]

    Hash = 128

    -------------------------------------------------Cut Before This -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    6. Now unrar/zip the cygwin1.dll and place it into the polyglot_14 folder

    7. Now go up a directory into C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2 and open ChessPositionTrainer.exe.config

    8. Change

    <Path value="C:\xboard\crafty-19-17FEN.exe"/>
    <CommandLine value="xboard"/>

    To

    <Path value="C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe"/>
    <CommandLine value=""/>

    8. Now Open CPT and from the Menu Select Extras --> Options and tab along to the ChessEngineTab

    8. Browse to the polyglot.exe in C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe

    9. Uncheck the other options.

    10. Press OK

    11. Click the Engine Button on the toolbar and Shredder is Shredding for you.

    I am now going to go on and see if I can get other engines up and running.

    Re: Chess engines

    This sounds really great for a work-around till UCI support is ready in CPT. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your experience!

    Great. Cool

    Test ok: It's works with Toga II 1.3.1. Following the same instructions.

    Re: Chess engines

    First thing- After finding and using CPT for awhile, Stefan has become my new hero.

    TooSharp and Jeferson- thank you as well.

    I had been pasting postions into Jose so I could analyse them with Toga II 1.3.1.  This will be so much easier if I am

    able to analyse postions without switching applications.  My only concern is what the output will look like.

    I favor the engine output created with programs like Chessmaster 9000, Jose, and if I am remembering correctly

    Chessbase Light.  I like to see a ranking of "x" amount of moves with their corresponding values.

     About Jose:  Gorgeous, lush interface.  It has bugs though and I don't think it is supported anymore.  Too bad

    because I think it could be fantastic.  I wish I could post a screenshot of the chessboard I created wtih Jose.  Very cool.

    Anyway, I am rambling.  Thank you, Thank you. Thank you to all of you wonderful people that make things like CPT possible.

    Re: Chess engines

    Hey, I am a relative newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff. I'm using Windows XP. Someone here said that rybka works, so I followed your instructions but when I click on engine in CTP it tells me 'Couldnt start xboard engine'

    There are three main differences between the way i set this up and the instructions, I dunno if any of these is causing the problem or its something else:

    - I have CPT 3.3, maybe I have to be using 3.2 for this to work?

    - I use my F drive as the main drive although that shouldn't be a problem

    - Maybe just my version of rybka isnt working?

     here is my polyglot.ini file:

    --------------------

    [PolyGlot]

    EngineDir = F:\Documents and Settings\Mike\My Documents\Fritz\Deep Fritz 10 + CB 9 + CB 8\engines\Rybka
    EngineCommand = Rybka v2.2.mp.w32

    [Engine]

    Hash = 128

    -----------------------------------

     And the part you said should changed in ChessPositionTrainer.exe.config looks like this:

            <Path value="F:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.3\polyglot_14.exe"/
            <CommandLine value=""/>

    What should I do to make this work? Thanks.

    Re: Chess engines

    Seems I made a typo, polyglot had to be capitalized in Path value="C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe"/. I tried this with Shredder and now when I click 'engine' in CPT I don't get the error, but nothing happens. Is there some other step I have to take to get the actual output from Shredder?

    Re: Chess engines

    I followed all the steps above carefully, and I can't get anything to show in the Xboard Engine window in CPT 3.3.

    I am trying to get Rybka to work.  Has anyone succeeded in Windows Vista and CPT 3.3 to get Rybka to work?  If so could you PLEASE post your polyglot.ini and ChessPositionTrainer.exe.config files?  Thanks!

    Here are mine and it won't work.  Note that I put the rybka engine in the PolyGlot_14 directory for simplicity.  (Rybka works fine inside Chessbase):

    polyglot.ini:

     [PolyGlot]

    EngineDir = C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.3\PolyGlot_14
    EngineCommand = Rybka_v2.2.mp.w32.exe

    [Engine]

    Hash = 128

    and

    ChessPositionTrainer.exe.config:

     <Path value="C:\Program Files\Chess Position Trainer 3.3\PolyGlot_14\polyglot.exe"/>
    <CommandLine value=""/>

    Re: Chess engines

    I finally got Rybka to work in CPT 3.3!  I put in the polyglot.ini to log the output, and for some reason that made it work.

    Sometimes polyglot crashes and I have to restart CPT.  Anyone had that happen?  This is on Vista.

    Anyone know how to make it display the depth of search for the engine output?  Right now it just gives the evaluation and the variation.  I'd really like to see the depth.

    CPT 3.3 is great!  Eagerly awaiting CPT 4.  Stefan, I'd be glad to pay for it when it comes out.  I stopped using ChessBase for my opening repertoire and now use CPT 3.3!

    Re: Chess engines

    I'm having the same trouble with my XP... Would you mind posting your commands for output? I think that is the key but I can't get it to work. Thanks!!!

    By the way this is a GREAT tool... Thanks Stefan!!!

     I finally figured it out... the following was added to the polyglot.ini:

     Log = true

     LogFile = output.log

    Rybka 3 works great!!!

    Re: Chess engines

    I think you did a terrific job and made a great contribution to this community. I am using Chess Opening Wizard as well as CPT 3.2 and I really need to decide which one I am going to use going forward. The only weakness in CPT is the inability to use a UCI engine, so your work is critical. If I can get it to work I will stick with it and support it's development with a donation.

     I followed your instructions but I can't get it to work and I think the problem is the cygwin1.dll file. If I double click it I get the following error:

    The module "C:\Program Files (x86)\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\Polyglot.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DLLRegisterServer was not found.

    Make sure that "C:\Program Files (x86)\Chess Position Trainer 3.2\Polyglot.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

    FYI, your original post is over 3 years old and the links are broken it would be great if you could update the original post. I have a 64 Bit Windows Vista Professional system so I don't know if I have the correct file. I downloaded the files, created the polyglot.ini file with Log = True and LogFile = output.log, and nothing happens. I am running EngineShredderUCI10.exe as the engine.

    Stefan, you have done an incredible job and I think you should concentrate on making this a more commercially viable product. You should be a rich man!

    Thanks,

    Mario

    Re: Chess engines

    Hi Mario,

    thanks for your feedback!

    I'm not yet an UCI expert, but I'm meeting the UCI man this week. He promised me that UCI support is almost done. I will let you know!

    Btw. I noticed you are using CPT 3.2. (at least that's your program path) I recommend to use CPT 3.3 as it is much more stable. You can find it in the download section.

    Regards,

    Stefan
